The maker of the hugely popular iPhone has admitted that a problem with its technology increased the perception that the phones have reception problems.
The company had previously said the reception problems resulted from the way users held the phone.
However in a news release issued Friday, Apple Inc. said the bars that display signal strength on the phone's screen are "totally wrong."
"We have discovered the cause of this dramatic drop in bars, and it is both simple and surprising."
After user complaints, Apple investigated and found that "our formula, in many instances, mistakenly displays two more bars than it should for a given signal strength. For example, we sometimes display four bars when we should be displaying as few as two bars."
Users who saw a dramatic drop in signal strength may well be in an area of weak reception, but "their big drop in bars is because their high bars were never real in the first place."
Apple said it will issue a software update in a few weeks so the bars will accurately reflect the signal strength. The mistake was present in the original iPhone, so the software update will be available for the 3GS and 3G models, as well as the recently launched iPhone 4.
Last week, Apple said the reception problem arose because of the way some users held the phone. It has an antenna built into the frame of the device itself, and users who held the phone in a certain way could interfere with its reception.
"Gripping any mobile will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance," Apple said June 25. "Avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases."
The reception problems, especially the big drop in the bars, led some users to believe that the iPhone 4 had a faulty antenna design.
But the antenna is fine, Apple said Friday.

Don't believe the BS Apple is saying. The defect is with the phone and you will lose the signal when you place your finger in a certain spot. They will not own up to this obvious flaw and suggest you purchase a case for the iPhone. If you complain loud enough they will give you the case for free.
