When I was a kid back in west philly we had a couple of bookies in the neighborhood. These were nice guys not the thugs you see on the godfather. Good neighborhood guys. Anyhow they were always looking over their shoulders for the cops. Every once in a while I would hear the grown ups talking about emmy or johnnie the sheik getting picked up. The whole neighborhood would get together an bail them out. (I think they were actually paying off someone) It was all a hush hush thing. Illegal you know.
Now you can play the numbers at the local corner store. They advertise it on tv and a perky little reporterette gives the results on the nightly news.
I have to correct an earlier post that I made where I said that the government doesn't run anything at a profit. I was wrong. They run a good book.

How totally true joe6pack, and not just one country but a lot of them. Have you noticed that the countries that are the riches in the world have all kinds of "bookie" outlets, and are government sponsered.

In Oklahoma we have several Indian tribes, Cherokee Nation being the largest operating 100s if not thousands of casinos! In 2005 the problem with gambling addicts got so bad gambling addiction counselors began to show up across the state! Many broken families, lost homes and increase in alcoholism and crime are a direct result of the Casinos! Money for the Tribes and misery for the families of many! Not a fair trade off!

same in canada in the north.money for casinos, no taxes,and many more anemities.but alcholism has risen native gangs try for control and the young suffer. hard to break a pattern. not all are like this,nor is it all natives... but,we all have a choice.what would you do if you were in their position ask the government first prize for years to come they always have a profit making scheme. give with one hand take with two just my 2 cents

No it is not tacochuck, but to big government you are only a number, not a humanbeing that way they don't have to take the blame(I say credit) for what they have allowed to happen, do they? It's all put on the person themselves, therefor the government is not to blame, are they?

Damn my curiosity,
but I wonder how many of you actually WATCHED the entire program?

... with particular note about the guy who put himself on an 'exclusion list', yet he was able to go into the casinos over and over again... even suffering a seizure while at a slot machine..

.... noting that some 1,000 or so SUICIDES a year are direct results of this addiction?
